Denos Chatting After Work

Announcing Office Hours!

  • Tim Post

We’re launching a bi-weekly Office Hours, hosted right in our Discord’s #office-hours channel. Much like office hours in real life, we’ll have some Deno team members available (via video) to answer your questions and chat about whatever you’re interested in.

The first live event is scheduled for Friday, January 13th, 2023 at 12:00PM (PT) and will last about an hour. Going forward, Office Hours will be held on 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, and the time will be staggered to accommodate those in other timezones. And if you miss an Office Hours, we’ll provide a high-level transcript so you catch up on your own time.

During Office Hours, we’ll be answering questions both live and submitted in advance (via our #office-hours channel, which you can start using today). We want this to be useful and casual, so we welcome any feedback and suggestions for topics to discuss.

A very quick FAQ:

Where / when will these events be held?

Office hours will be on 2nd and 4th Friday every month (exact time TBD). We’ll announce the schedule in advance in our Discord’s #office-hours channel, where we’ll post a new event link similar to this one as we schedule the live events.

Times will vary for now, since we want everyone to get a chance to participate. Needless to say, we intend to be flexible while scheduling the first few events.

What do you mean by a ‘high-level’ transcript?

The high-level transcript is not a verbatim transcript. Instead, it’s all of the key info (announcements, updates, questions and answers, etc.) pulled into an easily scannable document. This will be shared in #office-hours after each event so you won’t miss anything if you can’t attend.

Do I need to have my cam and microphone on?

No; both cam and microphone use are optional for all participants. Additionally, if you’d like to use chat on your end to interact with us while we’re speaking, that’s fine! We’re excited to have you, however you materialize!

If you need accommidations to particpate, please feel free to reach out to us in advance (I’m [email protected]).

What kinds of questions should / can I ask at office hours?

If it relates to Deno and being a developer, you’ll be in the right place! What matters most is your timing: if the question requires a bit of work for us to answer properly, try to ask it in advance of the live event when we poll for questions. It’s not always possible to know how much depth an answer might have, don’t worry! If we can’t answer your question live, we’ll make sure to follow up in chat later, or explain it at the next event.

We ask that everyone be polite and welcoming to all attending; please make sure all questions are appropriate for a work setting.

We can’t wait to meet you!

Above all, this program is designed to build connections! We’re going to keep it as simple as possible as we improve it, as we host a few events, so please come and enjoy a very low-key conversation with us! We hope you’re excited, and we’ll see you there!
